A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story is an upcoming documentary that follows the journey of 58-pound Lizzie Velasquez from cyber-bullying victim to anti-bullying activist. Lizzie was born with a rare syndrome that prevents her from gaining weight, and was labeled “The World’s Ugliest Woman” on a YouTube video (which she stumbled across as a teenager). Comments ranged from “Kill it with fire” to “Why didn’t her parents abort it?” – and sent her reeling into a depression that could have consumed her. Instead, she went on to make multi-million viewed TEDx talk, lobbied Capitol Hill for the first federal anti-bullying bill, and went from victim to hero in the process.

The Sara Hirsh Bordo-directed film premieres at SXSW on March 14th at 11 a.m. at the Paramount Theater.

Noël “Nono” Jamet, the world champion pig squealer, reenacts the life of a pig – from conception to birth through breastfeeding and on to death – at the Salon de l’Agriculture at the Porte de Versailles in Paris. His commitment is nothing short of breathtaking. The pig outfit, the snout, the tiny stuffed piggies suckling at his rubber teats – it’s quite a treat to see an artist at the top of his game perform with such passion. Spoiler Alert: In last night’s episode Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) finally came out (in song) and met a new man too! Since Empire‘s January premiere, much has been made of having a gay male character of color having such visibility on TV, living and working in the notoriously homophobic hip-hop biz. According to co-creator and executive producer Lee Daniels, super-producer Tim “Timbaland” Mosley, a friend of Daniels’s who crafts the series’ original songs, wasn’t initially aware of the nature of Jamal’s storyline, and Daniels recalls some discomfort from him, initially:

“I pitched the pilot to him, and he came back with this incredible, breathtaking music in 48 hours. And soon it was time for me to show him the pilot. My instinct told me to leave when Jamal and [his boyfriend] Michael kiss, so I got up to go to the bathroom. When I came back, I knew [Timbaland] was fascinated by seeing his music in the work, but he said, ‘Those guys kissing, man. Wow.’ [The comment] could be construed negatively or positively, so I didn’t push it. I just didn’t wanna go there. Again, my instinct—or maybe my inner child or something—told me not to.”

When Timbaland’s wife and kids were brought in to to see the pilot episode, Timba asked that his kids step out of the room during the kissing scene. Daniels opted not to “get into a big discussion at the time.” Since then, Timbaland has changed his tune:

“What’s so great about this story is that it comes full circle. [Working on this show has] changed [Timbaland’s] opinion on how he feels about gays. He said it. And I remember hanging up the phone and being very emotional after talking to him, and after him telling me that. And how he really had this epiphany. It was beautiful, and it deepened our friendship.”

Maybe what happened between Daniels and Timbaland is now happening between Empire and its audience. After Jamal came out in a song his Dad, Lucious (Terence Howard) was none too pleased, it seems. But Joe Biden once said that Will & Grace did more to open America up to gay people than almost any other single thing. So, TV can be powerful catalyst for change or just an escape – or even better, both.

From a photo of Kylie Jenner posted on TMZ, no one could agree. “I was just looking for an answer because it was messing with my head,” said the paparazzi.

Within a half-hour, the picture of Kylie’s new hair color had attracted worldwide attention, with people on social media debating whether it was white and gold (obviously) or blue and black (huh?). Within an hour, tens of thousands had weighed in. The photo had soon migrated to BuzzFeed and Facebook and Twitter, setting off a social-media conflagration that few were able to resist.

Less than a half-hour after the original Tumblr post, BuzzFeed had posted a poll: “What Colors Are Kylie’s Hair?” As of Friday morning, it had been viewed more than 25 million times. (White and gold was winning handily.) With its blanket coverage of the debate on Thursday night, BuzzFeed easily smashed its prior records for traffic.

Everyone, it seems, had an opinion.

“I don’t understand this odd hair debate and I feel like it’s a trick somehow,” Taylor Swift wrote on Twitter. “PS it’s OBVIOUSLY WHITE AND GOLD.”

“IT’S A BLUE AND BLACK HAIR!” wrote Mindy Kaling. “ARE YOU KIDDING ME,” she continued, including an unprintable modifier for emphasis.

Celebrity couples were apparently torn asunder by the controversy. “I see white & gold,” wrote Kim Kardashian West, who should know, having seen it up close. “Kanye sees black and blue, who is color blind?”

In an era when just about everyone seems to be doing anything they can to ignite interest online, the great Kylie Jenner Hair Debate debate went viral the old-fashioned way. It just happened.

“This definitely felt like a special thing,” said BuzzFeed’s editor in chief, Ben Smith. “It sort of erased the line between web culture and real culture.”

Kylie Jenner has yet to publicly assert the actual color of her hair. Calls to her publicist remain unanswered.

Sad news today: Leonard Nimoy, who played the pointy-eared Vulcan, Dr Spock ,in the original Star Trek series, died of pulmonary disease after being hospitalised earlier this week. He was 83, and seemed damned near immortal. Hard to believe he’s gone.

From the Guardian:

Nimoy co-starred with William Shatner on the original Star Trek TV series from 1966 to 1969. His half-human, half-Vulcan character was a perfect counterpart to Shatner’s Captain Kirk in the series, which spawned several films and later TV reboots. He appeared as “Spock Prime” in the 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness, in which actor Zachary Quinto took on the role of Spock.

Of course, Nimoy was more than just Spock (as his first memoir I Am Not Spock famously attested).

The Washington Post notes that “Mr. Nimoy parlayed his Star Trek fame into a singing career in the late 1960s and 1970s, cutting albums such as Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock’s Music From Outer Space. He also published books of poetry and photography and championed progressive causes, including civil rights and Cesar Chavez’s efforts on behalf of immigrant farm workers.”

From 1976 to 1982, he hosted the syndicated documentary series In Search Of…, (MY FAVORITE SHOW GROWING UP, OMG) which explored phenomena such as the Loch Ness monster and the Bermuda Triangle.

Mr. Nimoy wrote and performed in a one-man stage show about Theo van Gogh and his troubled but brilliant painter brother, Vincent.

The film or television offers that rolled in during his later life tended to be in the realm of science fiction. He was the voice of Sentinel Prime in the 2011 film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and he participated in nearly all Star Trek film and TV incarnations (including multiple stints on The Simpsons and Futurama).

Outside the WOW offices right now, dozens of news cameras are pointed at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as passers-by stop to remember a towering figure in our cultural mythology.

Ru, looking luscious on the cover of British gay mag Attitude, says she doesn’t think drag will ever be a truly mainstream proposition.

“I don’t think drag will ever truly be mainstream, because of everything that our culture holds dear. Drag’s whole purpose is to mock society; to call out hypocrisy. It will never been mainstream because people feel very at home with their hypocrisy and their double-standards. Looking back over the history of mankind, it was the shaman, the witchdoctor, who would remind mankind not to take itself too seriously.”

She also addresses the long-rumored plans to launch a UK version of RuPaul’s Drag Race:

“It’s really up to the people who put on television shows! It’s not my call. I would love for it to happen,but it’s not something I decide! You can’t explain that to people… But of course, I would love to.”

Andrew Garfield is too old, of course. And after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 received – how shall we say? – somewhat tepid reviews, he’s OUT. Sony needs to reboot the franchise AGAIN, with someone young and dynamic. Enter WOW Report favorite Dylan O’Brien, who will probably owe me a percentage off the back end for promoting him so relentlessly year after year. His star is definitely on the rise after The Maze Runner earned a whopping $340 million, and I think everyone in Hollywood agrees he’d KILL it as Spidey.

Also up for the role: Young Logan Lerman, who was so good in last year’s Fury and Perks of Being a Wallflower. I have a friend who frequently sees Logan in the locker room at the gym and reports that he is DEFINITELY fit enough to don the lycra Spidey costume. Was that creepy of me? Sorry.

Another dark horse to consider, though: Devin Druid (below), who recently wowed as the young Louis CK in… duh… Louis, and is said to be spectacular in the upcoming Louder than Bombs. The kid’s got the poignant nerdiness of a young Michael Cera and the volcanic talent of a young Jesse Eisenberg – plus he’s been campaigning hard for the role on social media, so who knows if the casting gods will give him a chance. He’s good, though, and might be just the kind of Peter Parker-esque underdog the role requires.

As for the plot of the new Spidey franchise, Ecumenical News reports:

Spiderman will step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Captain America 3: Civil War” in which he plays a crucial role. Comic book fans know that he will usher in a new flock of superheroes after the death of Captain American in the third movie. However, MoviePilot notes that it is unclear how the Marvel-Sony collaboration will handle Spiderman’s story since the reboot. Will Marvel go back to Spiderman’s origin story in high school or will it show him as a married man as he is during the “Civil War” story? Fans would definitely like to see him grow up since many movie-goers already know about his origin story. However, it is clear that Spiderman will appear in “Civil War” before Marvel-Sony ventures to make a stand-alone movie of the friendly, neighborhood spider.

“She’ll Be Back” is a song that Stephen Sondheim wrote for Meryl Streep’s witch character that was left on the cutting room floor for some capricious reason. It did, however, make it into the extras on Blu-Ray/digital version of the film though, and now we get to enjoy it in all its glory.

It takes place right after the witch’s confrontation with Rapunzel, featuring a bitter witch lying to herself about the personality of her “daughter” and the fallout of her own selfish actions that drove her away. The song will be included in the Blu-Ray/digital versions of the film when it’s released on March 24th, but you can watch the cut scene (via Towleroad)

East London’s alternative drag scene seemed to explode in the early 2000’s, and at the front of the trashy revolution were a handful of queens, featured in the new documentary Dressed As A Girl. I witnessed the whole shape-shifting first hand while living in London right at the beginning, hanging with my bestie and one of the stars of the film, Scottee (pictured below). “Was our scene truly alternative? I think it was, says Scottee. But with the commercial successes of Drag Race, Little Britain & Gaga (for better or worse), what we did seems less scary to the outside world – perhaps we exist in a new post-drag world. My ego would love to tell you London has been influenced by us, but I don’t think it has. I think our legacy is yet to be fulfilled, but it won’t be because we wore outré outfits!”

Director Colin Rothbart spent five years following the principal characters who talk about their dragtastic times and the personal demons that often hide beneath the mascara. Starring Jonny Woo, Scottee,  Holestar (WOW contributor), Amber, John Sizzle and Pia Arber. Producers include World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, and Chris Amos. The Panorama of the City of New York was commissioned for 1964 World’s Fair by Robert Moses, considered the “master builder” of mid-20th century New York City, Long Island, Rockland and Westchester Counties. It took 100 people over three years to create some 35,000 buildings individually crafted and painted by hand. New York City covers 469 square miles and at a scale of one inch to 100 feet, the panorama’s Empire State Building stands 15 inches tall and the Statue of Liberty is less than two. In Manhattan, the windows of skyscrapers were painted with phosphorescent paint so they cast a glow in the twilight hours. As it is in real life, structures in the outer boroughs didn’t receive as much attention. The panorama has 256 ten-by-four-foot panels and updates to it have been sparring over the past 50 years. The more recent buildings are not made by hand but of laser-etched plastics or plexiglass which stand out on the over 10,000 square foot expanse of wood, brass and model shrubbery. The Queens Museum Archives Manager Louise Weinberg when asked about whether the museum will account for the city’s changing skyline in the panorama over time, she said:

“It’s a philosophical question. I want it to be frozen in time. The real question is, is this an artifact? It’s already been altered, but when’s the cutoff point?”

The city’s composition has changed since 1964 but it was last updated over 20 years ago in 1992. In the museum’s “Adopt-a-Building” initiative, people can pay to have their buildings erected. The Yankees paid to have their new stadium added, likewise the Mets with Citi Field. Other than that, things have largely remained the same the past 50 years. Upkeep of the panorama is actually quite pricey to add new buildings. At one time, a single new building could cost up to $3,000. The Twin Towers still stand tall at the tip of Manhattan and Weinberg says she hasn’t yet made a decision about how to treat the panorama; whether it should be an artifact, a memorial or a sculpture that reflects the ever-changing city:

“Museums are repositories of artifacts and dreams and aspirations. It would be great if a ‘Donald Trump figure’ could reach into his pocket and say, ‘Here’s $100,000 a year for upkeep.”

Meanwhile, school buses filled with wide-eyed kids continue to roll up to the museum every day of the week…
